CASA Volunteer needed for More than 1 year
Opportunity Description: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers are caring adults, like you, that advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the court system. CASA volunteers go through a comprehensive training that teaches them everything they need to know about how to be an effective CASA for the children we serve. Our volunteers review case history information, interview all parties in the case, and develop a special relationship with the family, specifically the child. One of the CASA’s main roles is an advocate for the child. Not only do CASA volunteers advocate for the child’s best interests by reporting progress made to the court and making appropriate recommendations, but they also inform the court of the child’s wishes. By telling the court what the child wants, whether it is regard to their living situation or any other aspect of their life, the child feels empowered. Through the CASA, they learn that adults can be trusted (many times they cannot even trust their own parents), that there will be something consistent in their lives (the average foster child moves 6-7 times during their stay in foster care and many times into a new community with all new people), and that what they have to say matters. Children who have a CASA volunteer are much less likely to return to the child welfare system. They are more likely to find a permanent, loving home. They typically spend less time in foster care, experience less teen pregnancy, are less likely to go to jail in the future, and are less likely to become parents of children who also find themselves in the child welfare system. National CASA says that volunteers will spend an average of 10 hours per month on their CASA case, and CASA requires a committment of at least 1 year. If you are willing to be a powerful catalyst for change in the life of an abused or neglected child, please consider CASA. In Emporia, KS, our CASA program is called SOS CASA of the Flint Hills. For more information, please call Dena Russell at 620-343-2744 or reply to this email. I would be happy to mail you some information about CASA or link you with a CASA representative in your area. Of course, as with any volunteer opportunity, CASA is not for everyone. If you know someone who might make a great CASA volunteer, feel free to spread the word!
